The Hillside
Inwood, New York City

Hillside Senior Living will bring 164 units of much-needed affordable senior housing to the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. The new ground-up U-shaped development is carved into a steeply sloping site and draws much of its inspiration from seasonal changes experienced in the dramatic Fort Tryon Park nearby. Vertical standing seam copper sheaths the gently curved street façade, and playful grey stripes frame a series of courtyards that terrace up the hill in the rear. Inside, lobby, stairwell, vestibules, corridors, laundry, and multi-purpose resident activity rooms are designed to encourage informal communal gatherings. Built to Passive House standards, the community is run entirely on electric power, using no fossil fuels.

“37 Hillside is a prime example of what we want our affordable housing developments to achieve for residents. This building provides 164 beautiful, energy efficient, affordable homes for seniors as well as supportive services for those who have experienced homelessness, programming to meet the needs of seniors, and gathering spaces for residents and the community alike.”

— Louise Carroll, NYC HPD (Housing Preservation & Development) Commissioner

“A series of micro strategies are deployed to create an overall framework for design whereby we bring sustainability, healthy living, equity, pride, and joy to the homes we create.”
